The National Context

How to read the map

Circle size is scaled monotonically to the working urban population: larger cities have larger circles. Gold identifies Kurdish-majority cities; coral identifies genuinely mixed cities where Kurds are one of the major city-wide communities.

Figures are working 2024–26 urban estimates and do not use district totals. Afrin is shown as a range reflecting post-2024 returns; Akre is the least certain Iraqi case near the 100,000 threshold. The demographic polygons remain contextual and must not be read as population shares.

Towns of 50,000–99,999 can be switched on with “Show towns 50–100k”. They use the 2023 official urban counts, or the UN 2025 spatial urban-agglomeration figures where municipal limits understate a continuous built-up area.
